Our trip to the Seneca Park Zoo

I’m going to take a little break today from posting about fitness. Only because my wife and I took our grand kids to the Seneca Park Zoo in Rochester, NY, yesterday! I personally LOVE zoos. There are many things to learn, cool animals to see, and I love seeing the kids getting into the whole experience!

My wife and I went to the zoo in Abilene, Tx, on our honeymoon, almost 22 years ago. We used to take our kids to the zoo every summer when they were younger. I think I always had more fun than they did! We took our grand kids to the zoo in Syracuse, NY, earlier this month, and they enjoyed it. I liked the zoo in Syracuse because of the animals they have, and they allow free entry for veterans, and up to 5 family members. We had to pay to get into the Seneca Park Zoo, but it wasn’t expensive. Adults were $12.00 each, kids 3-11 years of age are $9.00, and kids 2 and under are free.

We arrived at the zoo, and got prepared to go in (stroller, drinks, changes of clothes for Zak, our grand son). We paid and went in. Grandma (Zak calls her mam-maw) stayed with the kids while I went back to the car to get Emma’s hat that she forgot in the car. Before I went to the car, I took this picture of a rhino..

We decided to go see the penguins (my favorite!), lions, and sea lions. Lions are more of a community than other cats in the wild. The females all get pregnant around the same time, they feed each other’s young, and they hunt in packs. Lions sleep on average 20 hours per day!

Emma and Zak were having a lot of fun, as this photo suggests!

All in all, it was a great day! I wish we would have had more time to see more animals, but, by the time we got there (it was almost 2 hours drive!) we would have been cutting it short when the park closed. The park hours are 10:00 am to 4:00 pm (April 1-October 31) and 10:00 am-3:00 pm (November 1-March 31). Grounds remain open until 5:00 pm and 3:00 pm, respectively. There are signs all over the zoo, pointing the visitors to all the different animals, gift shops, eating places and restrooms.

To me, zoos are a great way to bond with your children/grand children. We really love spending time with our grand kids and if we get opportunities like this to take them to the zoo, we take the time to do so! We took Emma two years ago by herself, as Zak was just a baby, along with her auntie Abbey. We went to Syracuse that time and grandma and I have always wanted to take them to this zoo. Our goal next year is to take them to the Buffalo Zoo, in Buffalo, NY! Now THAT zoo is awesome! Our little man, Zak had too much fun it seems…..

What is your favorite animal to see at the zoo? Do your children have a favorite animal?
